The Park was established by the British government as a reserve area to protect tigers. Corbett is famous for its wild population of Tigers, Leopards and Elephants along with other animals like Deer, Wild Boar, Jungle Cat, Fishing Cat, Sloth Bear, Black Bear, Wild Dog, Jackal and, Crocodile and so on.

After Corbett, the Nanda Devi National Park and Valley of Flowers are very popular national parks in Uttaranchal and both the parks have been named as a UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Rajaji National Park is very close to capital city of Uttarakhand - Dehradun. Govind Pashu vihar and Gangotri National Park are lesser known but worth visiting wild life sanctuaries in the state.
