Jim Corbett National Park lies in the Ramnagar, a city of Nainital district in Uttarakhand state. Named after the hunter turned conservationist, Jim Corbett, the park was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park. Jim Corbett Park is regarded as the oldest national park in India.
In the year 1947, after India's independence, Jim Corbett National Park in Uttaranchal was renamed as Ramganga National Park. In 1956, the park was again renamed as Jim Corbett National Park, in memory of Mr. Jim Corbett.
The present area of the National Park is over 1318.54 sq. km. including 520 sq. km. of core area and 797.72 sq. km. of buffer area. Trees cover almost 73 % of the park, whereas over 10 % of the area consists of grasslands. Jim Corbett Park is the dwelling of around 110 kinds of trees, 50 species of mammals, 580 types of birds and 25 reptile species. It is the hub of the endangered Bengal tiger of India.
