Valley of Flowers


The Valley of Flowers National Park is located in Chamoli district at a distance of about 595 kilometers from Delhi. Regarded as one of the most important attraction of Uttaranchal, Valley of Flowers has the largest concentration of various species of wild flowers. Spread across an area of 87.5 Sq. Km, this national park is placed at an altitude of 3,250 meters above the sea level.


Valley of Flowers is the top National Park of Uttaranchal which was discovered by Frank Smith, a mountaineer, explorer, and botanist who found this valley in the monsoon of 1931. The valley was given the status of a reserve in the year 1982 and is famous across the world. It was also recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.


The Valley of Flowers is open only during the months of April to October, while during rest of the year it is covered with snow. But the best time to visit the Valley of Flowers National Park is during the months of July and August, when the flowers bloom to the maximum. The valley has around 300 different varieties of flowers, which seems like a colorful carpet in the snow clad mountain.


You can see flora that includes orchids, poppies, primulas, calendulas, daisies and anemones, and also rare species like the Brahmakamal, the Blue Poppy and the Cobra Lily. Access to the valley is restricted to daylight hours only from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the last entry is done at 3 p.m., after which no one is allowed inside.


Jolly grant airport in Dehradun located at a distance of about 295 kilometers is the nearest airport to the Valley of Flowers National Park. The nearest railway station is Rishikesh, which is about 276 kilometers away. The valley is also accessible via road. Govind Ghat is the closest destination to the valley of flowers, which is about an hour's drive from the valley.


To reach Govind Ghat, you have to travel a distance of about 10 hours by road from Joshimath. The valley is over 13 kilometer away from Govind Ghat, and can be reached by trekking through a steep mountain to reach Ghangaria, the base camp.


One of the cheap accommodation options available near the valley is the guesthouse run by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN), which can be booked in advance. There are also plenty of other options of hotels and camping facilities available at Ghangaria that you can choose from.
